The twelve casino hotels of downtown Las Vegas hold roughly 8,500 rooms, a figure that has been stable for a decade apart from the addition of Circa’s 512 rooms in 2020 and the Downtown Grand’s second tower the same year. The Las Vegas Strip, by comparison, holds more than 100,000. Downtown is a small market, and inventory at its largest property moves it.
By property
Room counts are approximate and drawn from the hotels’ own published figures and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s inventory reports. Properties periodically take floors out of service for renovation.
| Hotel | Rooms (approx.) | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Nugget | 2,400 | Fertitta Entertainment |
| Downtown Grand | 1,120 | CIM Group |
| Plaza | 1,000 | Tamares Group |
| California | 780 | Boyd Gaming |
| Four Queens | 690 | TLC Casino Enterprises |
| The D | 630 | Derek Stevens |
| Circa | 510 | Derek Stevens |
| Fremont | 450 | Boyd Gaming |
| Main Street Station | 400 | Boyd Gaming |
| El Cortez | 360 | Epstein group |
| Golden Gate | 120 | Derek Stevens |
| Binion’s (Hotel Apache) | 81 | TLC Casino Enterprises |
The Golden Nugget alone holds more than a quarter of the district’s rooms, across four towers built between 1946 and 2009. The three smallest hotels, the Golden Gate, Binion’s, and the El Cortez’s original building, are the oldest.
What the distribution means
The Golden Nugget sets the market. With a quarter of the inventory and the highest rate ceiling downtown, the Golden Nugget’s pricing is the reference point for every other property. When it is full, the rest of downtown fills behind it; when it discounts, the others follow within days.
Circa is small for its profile. The newest and most expensive property downtown has fewer rooms than The D next door. Circa’s revenue model is weighted toward its sportsbook, pool, and food and beverage rather than room volume, and its rates reflect that it can sell out 512 rooms at a premium on most weekends.
The small properties are inelastic. The Golden Gate, Binion’s, and El Cortez sell out on event weekends regardless of rate, because their inventories are too small to absorb the demand. That makes them the hardest downtown rooms to find on peak dates and, on ordinary weeks, often the cheapest.
Boyd’s three properties are one block. The Fremont, California, and Main Street Station together hold about 1,600 rooms, more than any owner except Fertitta, and they are marketed as a unit to the Hawaii visitor base that Boyd has cultivated since the California opened in 1975.
Change since 2010
Downtown’s room count grew by roughly 900 between 2010 and 2020, almost all of it in two projects: Circa, which opened in October 2020, and the Downtown Grand’s 495-room second tower, which opened in the same year. Over the same period Binion’s closed its 365-room hotel tower in 2009 and reopened only the 81-room Hotel Apache in 2019. No new hotel has been announced for the district since.
