The National Finals Rodeo is downtown's biggest week

Ten days in December bring the rodeo's crowd to Fremont Street, where the casinos have built an event schedule around it. How the week works and what it does to rates.

The National Finals Rodeo, held in Las Vegas every December since 1985, is the event that fills downtown hotels most reliably. The rodeo itself takes place at the Thomas & Mack Center near the university campus, ten performances over ten nights, but its crowd has made Fremont Street its evening headquarters, and the downtown casinos have organized their December around it.

The 2026 rodeo runs December 3 through 12.

What happens downtown

The Fremont Street Experience hosts nightly entertainment during the rodeo, with country acts on its stages and the canopy’s light shows reprogrammed for the week. The Golden Nugget, The D, the Plaza, and the Boyd properties hold their own nightly events: watch parties for each performance, autograph sessions with competitors, and concerts. Several casinos set up temporary bars and merchandise tents in their frontages. The Plaza, at the head of the street, has for several years hosted a rodeo-themed show in its showroom and an outdoor stage.

The Cowboy Christmas trade show, which runs at the Las Vegas Convention Center concurrently with the rodeo, draws much of the same crowd during the day.

What it does to rates

The NFR is a citywide sellout, and downtown rates during the ten days run two to four times their early-December levels on either side of the event, based on the hotels’ published rates in recent years. Unlike the January conventions, the rodeo crowd is weighted toward downtown by preference rather than price, which makes the downtown sellout earlier and firmer. Rooms at the smaller properties are typically gone months out.

Two patterns are consistent:

  • The first weekend is the peak. Opening night falls on a Thursday, and the Thursday-through-Saturday of the first weekend is the most expensive stretch of December downtown.
  • The middle weeknights soften. Rates for the Monday through Wednesday performances are lower than the two weekends and sometimes become available at the larger properties in the last two weeks before the event as group blocks release.

History

The rodeo moved to Las Vegas from Oklahoma City in 1985 after a bid led by Benny Binion, whose Horseshoe casino had hosted a bucking horse sale and whose standing in the rodeo world helped bring the event west. Binion’s involvement is the reason the rodeo’s crowd made downtown its base from the first year; the Horseshoe’s sponsorship of the event continued after his death in 1989. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has extended its agreement with Las Vegas several times, most recently through 2035.

For visitors not attending

The NFR crowd makes the ten days the most crowded and most expensive stretch downtown between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. A visitor without rodeo plans will find lower rates and a quieter street in the week before the rodeo opens and in the week after it closes, both of which are among the cheapest periods of the year downtown.
